What you're taking on
Asian water monitors are large, powerful, genuinely trainable lizards. Black Dragons, albino projects and high-white lines have pushed them into the designer market, but the husbandry has not gotten any easier: an adult needs a room-sized enclosure, deep water, and daily engagement to stay tractable.
Buyer’s checklist
- Whether it has been handled daily since hatching — this is decisive.
- Captive-bred; imports carry heavy parasite loads.
- Line or morph stated (Black Dragon, albino, high-white).
- The enclosure footprint the seller recommends for an adult.
- Claw and tail condition; check for old injuries.

Husbandry
Keep it right from day one
Highly intelligent and food-motivated; settles remarkably with consistent, respectful interaction.
Enclosure
Custom build with a water feature they can fully submerge in — 8×4×6 ft minimum — bigger is better, plus a soak tub as an adult, 4×2×2 ft grow-out with tight security to start.
Temperature
Warm side Basking 120–140°F surface; ambient mid-80s, cool side 75–80°F.
Humidity
70–80%. Substrate: Deep soil/cypress mix that holds burrows and humidity.
Diet
Whole prey: rodents, chicks, fish, crustaceans, eggs, scaled to head width; whole prey over processed food, juveniles daily to every other day; adults 2–3x weekly. Obesity is the top husbandry failure — lean, varied feeding wins.
Adult size
5–7+ ft (males larger). Daily calm interaction builds trust — socialization is a foundation you keep building on, not a switch you flip.
Commitment
15–20+ years. Experience level: advanced — a large, powerful, intelligent monitor.
Escape-proof latches everywhere — salvators test enclosures constantly.
