What you're taking on

Bloods and short-tails are short, immensely thick snakes with colour that shifts as they mature. The old reputation for aggression came from imports; modern captive-bred lines are calm and deliberate. They run cooler and slower than most pythons — the commonest mistake is overheating and overfeeding them.

Buyer’s checklist
  • Captive-bred, not an import — this is the whole ballgame.
  • Lean body condition; bloods are easy to overfeed.
  • Which species: brongersmai, curtus or breitensteini.
  • No mouth or respiratory issues — check the labial pits.
  • Ask about the ambient temps it was kept at.
