What you're taking on
Colubrids are the family that gave the hobby corn snakes, kingsnakes, milksnakes and hognose. Most stay under five feet, eat reliably, and forgive the mistakes every new keeper makes. If you want an animal that will still be interesting in ten years without needing a dedicated room, start here.
- Feeding on frozen-thawed already — ask, don't assume.
- Kingsnakes are cannibalistic; confirm it was housed alone.
- Hognose are rear-fanged; mild, but understand it going in.
- Bright eyes and a clean, unkinked spine.
- For milksnakes, confirm the subspecies, not just the look.
Keep it right from day one
Active, alert and curious — fast-moving but rarely defensive.
Secure lid — colubrids are accomplished escape artists.
Read the morph names
The classic beginner's morph species — almost everything is simple recessive, which makes the genetics easy to learn. More combos being added.
No black pigment — bright reds, oranges and whites.
No red pigment — a grey, black and brown snake.
Soft lilac-grey ground with pinkish saddles.
Warm yellow-to-brown caramel tones replacing red.
Pattern fades on the sides and belly for a clean, saturated look.
Double-recessive combo — a pinkish-white snake (shown for reference).
